Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in power within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season follow below.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the initial group of heroes who will separate from the primary party to begin their own adventure, separate from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team features the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), the agile character (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that keeping everyone at one table would be unworkable.

That’s why, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Prelude, intertwining the characters’ stories before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Schemers, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a traditionally charged battle-oriented narrative style where non-violent answers are scarce.

Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear unsuited, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the group knows exactly where to proceed after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose death initiated the story’s plot—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, breaking into the secret base, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then settled his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the urban center, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each member has a personal reason to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and best friend, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the region and cautions that it is a nasty location.
  • The strong character and The healer, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to execute Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their status as important members in the influential clan could assist the group enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter vowed a unbreakable promise to The savior for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are hunted by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The rogue and The character are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric betrayed the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This means them few options but to journey toward Timmony in search of Casimir.

Future Episodes

From the recent installment’s Cooldown, we find out that the combat party will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the participants to assemble the Questers and Strategists tables.

Audiences can anticipate discovering which characters will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, released on next week.
